Differentiated learning through Precision Academics
Precision Academics©Adapted Education Programs “Success for students with special learning needs.” Written by Ken and Val Gray Contains over 500 Workbooks
including 30 BRAND NEW LIFE SKILLS Cross Curricula Workbooks for older students with severe learning needs Story from Ken: Just last Thursday, Val was running a demonstration lesson for a high school last week showing teaching staff how to use Precision Academics to support a student who has Down Syndrome and will be starting at the high school next year. This student has been using our material since kindergarten and despite a very significant level of learning difficulty and no spoken language (she communicates using Makaton Signing), she is able to confidently function in a mainstream classroom, participating in a blended program of mainstream and Precision Academics tasks. Even though she will be transferring from a tiny rural primary school to a very large suburban high school, this student is already feeling comfortable because she understands how the workbooks are structured, what she is expected to do with some degree of independence, and how to work effectively with the teacher/teachers aide when required. The high school staff were very pleased, and more than a bit relieved, to see how well this student is able to cope, and how easy the workbooks are to understand, follow and link to the high school curriculum. Children with Down Syndrome learn words with a visual link so that the word sound becomes linked to the object it is describing. This is exactly what we have in our Word Sounds and Spelling series of workbooks, although in our case our Resource Bank includes several hundred pages of words and graphics so that children can not only link sound to picture but we have included “context” as well. There are many more such examples that we go through so that teachers and parents can be confident that the resources they are using are educationally sound and up to date with the current research.
