McMinnville woman with Down syndrome 'beats the odds' at 73
When Mary Perry was born with Down syndrome in the 1930s, people with the disability typically didn't live past age 9.
At 73, the McMinnville woman has managed to outlive all but one of her eightbrothers and sisters. She is one of the oldest living people with Down syndrome.

Non-Profits Welcome Governments Carers Strategy
The New Zealand Carers Alliance, a coalition of 47 national non-profits supporting families with health and disability needs, has cheered the Governments launch of a Strategy for the countrys 420,000+ family carers. The Carers' Strategy was launched by the Hon Ruth Dyson on behalf of the Government at Parliament yesterday.

Ministry of Education seeks feedback on Schools Plus
You may already be aware of the discussion document published by the Ministry of Education called: Schools Plus. It is the governments blueprint for addressing the high rate of students leaving the education system with minimal or no formal qualifications or training. The proposed policy is to keep all young people in educational programmes, skills training or structured learning, relevant to their needs and abilities, until the age of 18.

Skin yields stem cell clue to diseases
Scientists have created stem cells from skin taken from patients with seven different diseases, raising hopes for potential new treatments.
Stem cells can transform into any of the 200 or so different cells found in the human body
The breakthrough will allow researchers to gain insights into the cause of illnesses including Type 1 diabetes, Down's syndrome and Huntington's disease.

World Down Syndrome Day 2008
Down Syndrome International (DSI) has officially earmarked 21, March as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). The date was chosen to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome in the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome and is used synonymously with Down syndrome.

Vet Medicine Researcher Examines Link Between Cancer, Down Syndrome
There's new hope for breast cancer research, and it's coming from a very unlikely place. Researchers at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences recently published articles in the journals Molecular and Cellular Biology and Carcinogenesis indicating that a protein long suspected to play a role in Down Syndrome may also contribute to treating this devastating disease.
