Teacher CoursesWe believe from international research and national success that students with Down Syndrome learn best in a mainstream, inclusive environment where they can participate in the daily life of their community being contributors. We also recognise that some families choose to place their children in a special school/satellite school. All students regardless of their ability are by right, eligible to enrol at their local school with their friends and siblings. If you would like more information or support in this process click here. As an organisation we know that educators are very keen to include students with Down syndrome effectively in their class/group. To provide an assistance we hold courses twice a year for all educators- February/March and August. They are advertised in the Education Gazette and here on the website. Specialist staff, Occupational Therapists, Senco's, Teachers, Teacher Aides and parent educators have all appreciated these comprehensive courses. Parents are welcome to attend all of the courses listed below. Down Syndrome Success in School - Junior & Middle Years 0-6 August 2, 9.30-4.30 pm More...

Software Solutions Assistance for Developing Language Workshop: Auckland Central for those working with children with language delay This practical workshop is for you!
Introducing the Presenter
Helen Geddes is the mother of 5 children and her youngest child has Down Syndrome and Autism. He (Kevin) is 16 years old. Helen is a trained primary school teacher and her husband, Trevor, is a computer programmer. Together they developed software to assist their son’s language learning and as a result of requests made it available to others. This software has now been used widely throughout NZ and in a number of other countries, in particular the USA. This software, Storymaker and Flashcards, is designed for the NZ context, and is highly customisable for each child. It has been extensively tested by New Zealand teachers to make sure it is easily accessible to those with little computer experience. Helen has worked in close partnership with Kevin’s pre-school and school teachers and Kevin has achieved excellent results because of this co-operative approach. She has developed a strategy for teaching children with special needs to gain language, particularly reading. This strategy is appropriate for children with good visual skills but who may have limited verbal skills. For the past 12 years Helen has been involved with the Robbie White Charitable Trust in Dunedin and for most of this time has supervised the Trust’s Field worker. This Trust supports families with children with special needs from birth right through school in language development. Helen is passionate about seeing a good partnership between families and professionals to gain the very best outcomes in language learning for special children and will explore how this can be achieved in the workshop.
